Augusto Pinochet was born November 25, 1915 in Valparaiso, Chile. He went to Chilean Army's War Academy for his education when he was a child was the oldest of 6 children and his father was a middle class government worker. Later in life, he became the dictator of Chile between 1973 and 1990 and Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army from 1973 to 1998. While he was in power, he became heavily involved in Operation Condor. It consisted of a series of kidnappings, disappearances and assassinations of significant opponents. The amount of people killed is unknown but it is estimated to be well into the thousands. He was charged with several counts of murder, torture and unlawful kidnapping. The charges ended up being dismissed in 2002 because he was in his late 70's and was unfit to stand trial. 3) Creative Piece (Poem)

Augusto Pinochet

There was a man named Augusto Pinochet.

Dictator and Commander of the Army until his final day.

A country filled with dread and despair

and yet he really did not seem to care.

His people were filled with fear

they would scream but no one would hear.

The torture seemed to never stop

The amount of disappearances never did drop

The amount of death took a toll

and damaged the country as a whole.

His rule ended in 1998

he never did see this becoming his fate

There was a man named Augusto Pinochet

He never did see the light of day.

4) Essential Question

What made Augusto Pinochet change his ways in life from someone who helps others to someone who kills other people to get what he wants?
