Mountain Ecosystem

Abiotic and Biotic factors

Abiotic :

Mountains, cold or hot temperature, sunshine, snow, ice, low air, high altitude, rocks, soil

Biotic:Goats,Mountain Lions,Insects,Vultures,Trees,Plants,Foxes,Grass,Bacteria,Fungus,Worms

Carrying Capacity

Carrying capacity is the limit to how many organisms of a certain species can live in one habitat. It is determined by the amount of resources in a habitat. The resources are:

Food,Water,Shelter,and Space(area to find food,water,and shelter)

Population size is easily determined by carrying capacity, such as in goats. The less grass and water there is, the less goats survive and the same relationship goes for high resources.

Limiting Factors

A limiting factor is any factor or condition that limits the growth of a population in an ecosystem.Ex. Disease,Extreme Weather,Shift in species' population.                               A predator/prey relationship in my ecosystem is mountain lions and goats. The less goats, the less mountain lions will survive and the same relationship for many goats.

Energy Roles

Producer:Grass,Trees,Plants Primary Consumer:Insects,Goats Secondary Consumer:Fox Tertiary Consumer:Mountain Lion,Vulture

Each role of energy gets its energy from the level below itself.Producers are vital, because they are the only ones who can take the sun's energy and turn it into chemical energy. If they're were none, they're would be no energy in an ecosystem.

Food Chains and Webs

Food webs are more realistic because they show more possibility in an ecosystem.

If we removed a population such as the fox, there would be one less organism to predate the herbivores. The herbivore population would grow to large eat all the producers and die off and force the animals that eat them to starve.

Energy Pyramid

Energy pyramids are pyramids because they show how there is less energy in the higher trophic levels.Producers are the biggest level because they have the most energy and top predators the smallest level because they have the least energy.

Photosynthesis

The formula for photosynthesis is

                                6CO2 + H2O (light)= C6H12O6 + O2

The substances needed for photosynthesis are water(H20),radiant energy, and Carbon Dioxide(CO2).The end product of photosynthesis is Glucose.

Photosynthesis energy transformation

Tropisms

A tropism is a turning or bending of an organism toward or away from an external stimulus.Ex.Grass bending toward light, trees turning upward do to gravity

These tropisms help the plant survive by helping them find resources and make it hard for herbivores to get to them.

Decomposers

Decomposers are vital to the ecosystem because they recycle minerals in the environment.Examples of mountain decomposers include:Worms,Bacteria, and Fungi

Adaptations

Adaptations are important because they help the organisms survive in the environment.Types of adaptations include:size, ways to find food, camouflage, energy storage,diet.Ex. of what organisms need in a mountain:yaks have larger hearts and lungs for the high elevation, the alpine marmot hibernates 9 months of the year to save energy, mountain plants have deep stems to store energy, and mountain plants above 3,000 feet to stay below being pelted by the snow pack.

If I were to place an alpine marmot in another environment it would over-hibernate and get eaten by a predator or under-eat and die from malnutrition.

Natural Selection

Natural selection is the process in which the organisms better-fitted to the environment survive and populate the ecosystem while the organisms with traits less-fitted to the environment die-off or migrate.Goats are an organism came from the process of natural selection. The formations of mountains caused the food to be lifted to be a higher elevation. The goats, which had hooves to grip on the rock, could get to the food more easily reproduced while the animals that couldn't get to the food died off.
