Caps For Sale!!
By: Victor Ward
Based on a folktale, the story follows the life of a mustachioed caps salesman who wears his entire stock of caps on his head; they consist of his own checked cap, then a bunch of grey caps, a bunch of brown caps, a bunch of blue caps and finally a bunch of red caps on the very top. He strolls through towns and villages chanting, "Caps! Caps for sale! Fifty cents a cap
I believe that the message Esphyr Slobodkina is trying to express in the story is Patience. The Peddler has high patience. I say that because, in the book, the Peddler is confronted by monkeys. They continuously bother the Peddler and try to take his caps as he is napping. The monkeys take all of his caps except for his own checkered cap. The Peddler finally awakes and through all the commotion he keeps his calm. He is steadily patient with the vexing monkeys. Finally, he ends up snapping on the monkeys and they give him his caps back. This shows that throughout the whole incident, he kept his calm until the monkeys gave him his caps back. I think people should be more like the Peddler. Patience is key to life. For me I have to be patient for football. Waiting for the hole to open up, and things like that. Again i say patience is the key to life.
Also she wrote the book to show how people should be determined. The Peddler is determined. Throughout the story, the monkeys will NOT give the Peddler his caps back. He begs, and begs the monkeys to give him his caps back. Any other man would have walked off and gave up. Not this one, he stayed determined to get his caps back. To me, determination means to have a certain drive. I have the drive to all the sports i play. You have to have to want to do something very bad. Having determination means that you will succeed at what you want.
