SETTING UP A PEER TO PEER NETWORK
NOTE: Make sure you take print screens throughout this session and paste them into a word document, we can then transfer them to a memory stick for your blog.
Step 1: THE ROUTER / SWITCH
Connect the power cable and Ethernet Cables to the router, and the Ethernet cables into the client PC.
Step 2: Configuring the IP Range
Open the Network sharing centre, this can be done within the control panel or by right clicking the network connection like in the image below:
Now click change adapter settings
Right click the wired adapter, and click properties
Now double click Internet Protocol Version 4
Now enter the IP range on each machine:
Laptop 1: 192.168.0.1
Laptop 2: 192.168.0.2
Laptop 3: 192.168.0.3
Laptop 4: 192.168.0.4
STEP 3: CREATING AND JOINING A HOME GROUP
Now we can create and create / join a Home Group for our peer to peer network.
NOTE: The laptop on IP range 192.168.0.1 needs to create the home group, this will create a unique password. This is used for security, the other laptops will need to join the home group and use this unique password to join.
TESTING THE NETWORK CONNECTIONS
Now you need to test that the laptops on the new network can communicate with one another. This can be done by opening the command prompt:
Click start and type: cmd (then hit enter)
Next type: ping 192.168.0. the last digit will be another laptop on the network so for example if you are IP: 192.168.0.1 then ping 192.168.0.2
