Role of iodine in the human body

Iodine's main role in the human body is to help with thyroid function and the production of thyroid hormones. A role in immune response is played by iodine too. Thyroid hormones, which are produced with the help of iodine, play a role in the metabolism of cells, causing iodine to play a role in them as well.

Consequences of insufficient levels of iodine

Not having a sufficient level of iodine intake could lead to an enlargement of the thyroid gland, also known as goiter. With that, the production of thyroid hormones are affected. Along the way, metabolism can be affected as well, which leads the health and well being of the body to decrease.
