About Ira Schmelkin
Well regarded for his work with capsule endoscopy, which uses small cameras encased within pills to photograph patients’ digestive tracts, Dr. Ira Schmelkin currently serves as chief of the department of medicine at Noble Hospital in Westfield, Massachusetts. In addition to his clinical work, since 2005 he has taught as an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Ira Schmelkin formerly held the post of chief of the division of gastroenterology at Berkshire Medical Center. His professional experience also includes many years in private practice in Great Neck, New York.
Active in advancing the field of gastroenterology, Dr. Ira Schmelkin has contributed research to a host of medical publications. He has published work on capsule endoscopy in the American Journal of Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and he has given presentations on the subject to colleagues at conferences, seminars, and meetings around the United States. A graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, Dr. Ira Schmelkin holds certification in gastroenterology from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
