Caring for our environment!

Natural Resources!

What are your Natural Resources?

  • Water
  • Air
  • Soil
  • Energy

What are these natural resources?

Natural resources are materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain.

Now we know what natural resources are! So lets learn about each of these resources!

Water covers about 71% of Earth's surface. On Earth, water is 96.5% of the planet's water is found in seas and oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and the ice caps Of Antarctica and Greenland. A small fraction in other large water bodies. There is 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds, and precipitation.

Water is a renewable resource. It has been on Earth for tons of years. Water goes through a cycle called the water cycle. Water has been going through this cycle for a long long time. Water is the key to life for many species and organisms.

But water can be polluted. Water Pollution is the contamination of water bodies. This happens when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful

compounds. This is happening all over the world. People and animals are dying every day from water pollution.

  1. Help out around you! You can be a big part in your economy.
  2. Get up and start doing community service!
  3. Pick up trash! Did you know that there is a patch of about 3.5million tons of trash in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!!!!! So many marine life is killed from trash everyday.

It only takes a few seconds to throw something away. Maybe even recycle that piece of trash. Don’t just leave that candy wrapper on the street next time, because that just might be the next thing to take away a life.

Think about it . . .

Air is the most common name for Earth’s Atmosphere. Air is mostly made up of nitrogen, oxygen, and argon. Water vapor counts for about 0.25% of it. Air is a very important part to Earth and makes it habitable. Without air Earth would be not livable.

Air pollution

Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. About 60% of people live in areas where air pollution has reached unhealthy levels.

AIr pollution kills about 7 MILLION PEOPLE !!!!!!

Cars create 50 to 90% of the air pollution on Earth.

Industries create around 50% of air pollution on Earth.

Humans Created almost all of the air pollution on Earth. Before humans there was about 1% of air pollution on Earth. We cause pollution to happen everyday. We are the ones creating these toxic environments!

Soil is the mixture of minerals, organic matter, gases, liquids, and the myriad of organisms that together support plant life. Soil is another key to life, but not any soil. Fertile Soil…

Fertile Soil

Fertile soil is soil that can support life. For soil to be fertile it must have:

  1. Rich nutrients necessary for plant life.
  2. It has sufficient minerals.
  3. It has soil organic matter.
  4. Proper Ph
  5. Good soil structure.
  6. Microorganisms that support plant growth.
  7. A large amount of topsoil.

But soil can be lost.

Soil can erode away and take thousands of years to get back.

Soil is a key part of our lives like the air and water, but we still treat it like dirt. So we need to think of new ways to save the air, water, and soil. So what are you going to do?

We use energy everyday. Energy is in our houses, cars, and even us! Energy comes from the sun and everything. Energy powers everything we use and do. One thing you might find interesting is energy can’t be lost or made.

Energy is released during every thing that we do. Energy can be found in waste. Then we can use less fossil fuels. Energy is growing more and more useful by using our waste to power up energy. This is called.

Any one can try it so why not you?

Breathing air in highly populated and polluted metropolitan cities can reduce your life expectancy by 2 to 3 years?

70% of toxic waste in U.S. landfills consists of e-waste, items such as hard drives, monitors, servers, etc?

Data centers around the world consume more energy in one year than the entire country of Sweden?

At least 36 states in the U.S. are expected to face water shortages within the next 5 years?

Over 200 million items of e-waste are thrown away every year in the U.S.?

RED is usually the color used for plastics.

ORANGE AND YELLOW are usually used for metal.

BLUE is usually used for paper.

Our society has been labeled as a throw away city! Is that really what we want to be know as? A waste city that throws and builds trash higher. If we want to be the best we can be we need to start being more and more generous with what we do!!!!! People this place is NOT going to change just because we say we want it to. We need to begin with little steps to make our community a better place.

But before we do anything we need to know what is waste?

Waste is the extra substances that we throw away in the trash. A person creates about 4.3 pounds of waste a day. This is about 1.6 more than the past. If you times that for every 7.125 billion people on the earth that is about thirty billion six hundred thirty-seven million five hundred thousand OF WASTE!!!!!!

That is A LOT of waste.

So what do we do?

Well there are three things we can do! There called…

  • Recycling
  • Re Using
  • and Reducing

These are a very good way to better our environment.

But what are these? What do they do and how do WE do them.

Well lets start out with Recycling.

Recycling is when you take a waste material and make it into a new item. Such as paper! Paper is a very easy material to recycle. It can easily be made into new paper items. This can also work with glass, metal, and even plastic.

You can find recycling everywhere! Many places use this to help save the local environment.

But what can you recycle?

Well some things that SHOULD ALWAYS BE RECYCLED IS…

Aluminum cans

Aluminum foil or bake ware

Steel cans and Tin Cans

Anything made of paper

Any type of glass prefered brown, green, or clear.

Plastic Make sure it’s clean!!!!!

Batteries and Light bubbles

Now what is reusing? Well reusing is well you reuse old items like clothes, or you cloth bags. Reusing is very simple. You can reuse easily if you go get clothes from thrift stores or spend the extra money on cloth bags. Reusing is very easy to do. Just reuse old stuff. Like having a glass bottle that you can put water in and reuse it.

Reducing is watching what you use and use less of what you use.

Such as buying things with less plastic or riding a bike instead of driving a car. You can also buy less clothing and reuse old clothes.

You just need to watch what you're doing and how you are using materials.

Our community can easily start doing these things. Sure it may cost a little but in the long run it will save us money and the Earth.

All we need to do is start using less fossil fuels. Try walking or riding a bike to work, or use things with less packaging. It’s easy to save the world so WHY NOT give it a try. The Earth won’t live forever if we do not take care of it.

Wanna Get up?

What do you do every day? Work? Video Games? Well, why not get up and help your community?

Have you ever thought about joining a community service party? But, would that even be fun? Well you would be very surprised by how many friends and how much fun you can have!

Lets say you want to have a community garden. This is some instructions you may want!

How do I start?

First, get a decent sized group! They don’t have to be strangers. Maybe a mom or dad? Even if you get a big group of strangers you can still make tons of friends. Making new friends can benefit in many ways. So give it a try!

Now what do we do with this group?

So maybe you want to make a schedule. A schedule would help split the work fairly and keep your group organized. Meetings would also make idea sharing easier. Maybe schedule a meeting every week or two. Just to help people be updated.

Where will this garden be at though?

This can be an important factor when doing a garden. One thing that would be helpful is to be near a water source. Some plants need a lot of water to survive. Also it helps to have nice fertile dirt. It may help to be near by to the garden. Another thing is to be prepared for vandalism. A shed would be good to keep all the tools and materials you have safe.

What to plant?

Okay now you are finally ready to plant, but what do you plant? Well first take into consideration on what you local plants are. You want the plants to be able to survive in the climate. Also look into what your community needs. This is a community garden!

Vermicomposting is when you take food scraps and worms to make better fertile soil. Vermicomposting allows worms to digest the food scraps. This makes the soil more rich and fertile and thats the best for planting! When making a garden you want the best soil, and fertilizer can have unwanted chemicals. Vermicomposting makes it more natural and better for the plants. This also allows for less trash to be getting built up in dumps. Also Vermicomposting helps worms have a nice yummy diet.

One thing you may want to know is Vermicomposting is work. You can’t just dump worms and food scraps in a box and expect something in day. You have to make sure you make your Vermicomposting as habitable as can be for the worms.

WORMS DO NOT WANT TO DROWN SO DON’T PUT TOO MUCH WATER IN, BUT DON’T LET IT GET TOO DRY EITHER!!!! If you feel your worms don’t have enough water just sprinkle a little on the top. It will sink down!

Also check the Vermicompost daily. You want to make sure your Vermicompost don’t become invested. This may lead to it no working or falling into a desaturate.
