Stanford University

After six years of planning and building, Stanford University was finally opened as a private school on October 1, 1891. New York newspapers did not believe that this university would have anyone attending it and said that the professors in the school would "lecture in marble halls to empty benches." Even though there were ones who doubted that Stanford University would be successful, the first students to attend where about 555 in total. And, by the second year of being open, there were 49 faculty members.

For my future, I plan on attending Stanford University and complete four or more years there. I wish to study psychology and I feel that this university is one of the best private schools that will help me in the medical field. I have always wanted to help people with any problems they are facing and I feel that Stanford University will help me accomplish my dreams.

My Career

Psychiatry has existed for over 150 years and people who have pursued this career have helped change peoples lives. In the future, I hope to be a psychiatrist, a medical doctor who will diagnose and treat mental disorders. A psychiatrist is a mental health professional that provides counseling to their patients. To be a psychiatrist, you need about 12 years of specific education and training. Also, you may need more practice based on what type of psychiatry you want to pursue. Even though there are disadvantages like high stress and untreatable illnesses for the patients, I want to help people with their behavioral issues and illnesses.

There are numerous psychiatrist that work with elderly, children, teens, people with addictions, or even work in court systems. Your average salary will depend on which area you focus on for psychiatry. Also, psychiatrist spend much of their time with their patients and patient's families in their workplace, most likely a psychiatric hospital or private clinics.

Psychiatry is one of the highest paying careers in the medical field. A psychiatrists average salary is about $186,000 and their average hourly wage is about $78. Psychiatrist work in individual or group therapy to help the patient deal with their problems. The benefits of this job is that they can set their own schedules, choose the cases they want, and they get paid a lot for helping others. To receive these benefits you need to complete a 4-year bachelor's degree, medical school that will take 4 years to finish, and you'd graduate medical school being a medical doctor. After medical school, you'll be placed in a residency program to learn the skills that a psychiatrist needs to treat and diagnose people.

The life of a psychiatrist will consist of interviewing, meeting with patients for an hour about twice a week, and treating them. Psychiatrist have to work and meet with with other family doctors, social workers, and public health nurses.
