I was born on April 13, 1743. I was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, where I inherited a huge estate from my father. When I was just fourteen he died and left me with my nine brothers and sisters. On my huge estate, I began building my lifetime home, Monticello. I was hardly ever there, but its where I longed to be.
I soon wrote the Declaration of Independence, with what we follow today. It took me two and a half weeks just to write the rough draft. I wanted everyone to be equal and the government not to have so much power.
I ran against John Adams in the presidential election of 1796. I got the second highest votes so I was vice-president. I ran again in 1800 and won over Adams this time, becoming the third U.S. president.
