My name is Kasey Taylor and I am 34 years old. My brother Jeff Taylor is a confederate soldier and is stationed in Gettysburg. I live in Birmingham, Alabama. My brother and I have lived in Alabama our whole lives. It's May 22, 1865. Jeff is in the Civil War and is fighting in battles.
Day 1, May 22, 1865
Every morning when I wake up at 7:30 a.m. I make my bed and head to the kitchen to make breakfast. After I eat I go out to the barn and check on the animals to see if they need milked or if the chickens need there eggs collected. When I go back to the house, I check to see if there is any mail from Jeff. Most days I will do something that can help Jeff and the other soldiers. When I send him mail, sometimes I also send cans of food. Today, I sent them food and supplies like combs, and soap.
Day 2, May 23, 1865
Dear Jeff, how are you brother. things seem weird without you here. i miss having you around but you will be home soon. how is everything in the war. the cows are making more milk than ever and the hens are laying big eggs. wish you were here to see it. I heard about the Battle of Shiloh. How did it go? Heard it was the bloodiest battle yet. write me back soon.
Day 3 May 24, 1865.
Today I woke up and the sun was shining more than it usually does. I made my bed, and walked outside and sat on the porch and read a book. After i did that i went down to the store and bought some razors so i can send them to Jeff. I picked up a few more stamps too for our letters. When i got home i boxed up some razors and a pint of shaving cream for him and other soldiers.
Day 4 May 25, 1865
All is well with me, im doing just fine here. Yes, the Battle of Shiloh was an intense, hard fought battle but we made through. im glad everything is well back home. i cant wait to see you again. I will be home soon, im just counting down the days. Thank you for the items you've been sending for us. there has been another battle the battle of bull run. it was another hard fought battle too. We all really need and appreciate all the help we can get. will write soon.
Day 5 May 26, 1865
Today is a very dreadul day. lastnight Abraham Lincoln got assasinated in the theater. i never expected this would happen to him, he didn't deserve to die like that. he's done nothing wrong to our country besides try to make it a better place. this is all so devastating. they don't know who did it yet, but I hope they find him real soon and give him what he deserves.
what's even more horrible about his death is that his poor wife was right there next to him when he got shot. even though he did carry on living shortly after he got shot, he ended up passing away.
