Monarchs in Medieval Times
Monarchs had the idea that they got their power from God, but really it varied greatly to how they got their power as ruler. "In England, monarchs became quite strong during the Middle Ages." William the Conqueror (as shown above) got his name from defeating his cousin, Harold, in the Battle of Hastings. He later then established a line of Norman kings in England. That is why he has the name William the Conqueror. That was also how many monarchs gained power, by killing other monarchs and taking their land. The more land you had the more lords or ladies you had to control manors and the more manors you had the more serfs you had which farmed and then you had tons of people having to give you money, or rent.
