Born in Poland, Mr. Nagel was a Holocaust survivor who came to America in 1947 on a school visa. Throughout his early years in the United States, he took courses at New York University and held positions in the import/export industry. Several years after moving to the U.S., he married his wife Gitta and moved to the West Coast. In 1955, he started Nagel Construction Company, in Los Angeles, where he focused on building single-family homes.
During its first quarter century, the company produced more than 2,000 homes in the San Fernando Valley under the brand Empress Homes. In the 1970s, the company expanded by creating Class A apartment complexes in Los Angeles and West Hollywood. In the following decade, it saw more growth as it moved into commercial real estate with retail and office buildings.
In 1988, Mr. Nagel made significant changes to the organization. He gave his construction company portfolio to Decron Properties, where his son serves as President. Today, he makes his home in Hancock Park region of Los Angeles with Gitta. They have four children, 15 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
