Jason Fond - Long Road to Director of Orthopedic Surgery

Jason Fond is the Director of Orthopedic Surgery for Nyack Hospital in Nyack, New York. Nyack Hospital serves the people of Rockland County with the best surgeons and medical professionals in the area. Dr. Fond is one of those specialists that the hospital advertises. Jason Fond is also the President of the medical staff there, a post he earned after consistently showing he could help people suffering from a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. Dr. Fond has performed thousands of successful surgeries on athletes who suffered injuries on the field, people suffering from arthritis, and other patients dealing with joint or muscle pain. Dr. Fond is an excellent surgeon, but his goal is always to solve whatever orthopedic issue his patients have by keeping them out of the operating room if possible. Dr. Fond believes that noninvasive treatments should be the first resort for any treatment because it’s much easier for the patient to recover and poses less of a risk of re-injury.

Jason Fond, as an orthopedic surgeon, had to complete 14 years of formal education before he could practice on his own. Orthopedic specialists usually have to earn a bachelor’s degree, spend four years in medical school to earn a medical degree, complete five years of study as an orthopedic resident at a major medical center, and complete one year of additional, specialized education. After an orthopedic specialist candidate has met all of his or her education requirements, he or she then has to earn an orthopedic license from the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS), which typically involves passing oral and written exams administered by the ABOS. Once they have these credentials and begin working as a professional orthopedic surgeon, these physicians have to stay up-to-date with current orthopedic news, knowledge, and skills by attending ongoing education classes and by studying the constantly changing nature of orthopedic theory in the medical community.

Jason Fond sees it as a part of his job to stay on top of all the news and changes in the orthopedic community. He works to use the added knowledge of research efforts around the country to help his patients get the best care he can provide and ensure that they are aware of new ways their ailments can be treated. While many other orthopedists specialize in one particular area of the body’s musculoskeletal system, such as the legs, feet, ankle, or spine, Jason Fond preferred to be an expert in all aspects of the medical specialty so that he could help as many people as possible reduce pain and lead an active, happy life. He moved from sports medicine, another specialty within the orthopedic specialty, into providing more complete care for all patients with a wide range of injuries and conditions.

Jason Fond - Combining Two Passions

Jason Fond began his medical training in 1991 when he enrolled in the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, but his medical aspirations truly began when he was a teenager. When he was still in high school, he sustained a serious back injury that required him to undergo spinal fusion surgery. This injury was sustained during the course of a diving accident. Such an injury might have proved discouraging for some people, but not for him. Indeed, not only was his passion for sports undiminished, but he’d found a new one as well: medicine.

After graduating from Tufts University, Jason Fond was accepted into the Albert Einstein School of Medicine at Yeshiva University. It was there that he began to realize his dream of combining his twin passions of sports and medicine into a career.

After receiving his M.D. in 1995, Jason Fond went onto attend two different residency programs before finding employment at Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine where he worked to help injured athletes recover from their injuries and get back onto the field.

In addition to his career as an orthopedic surgeon, Jason Fond’s passion for sports shows in other aspects of his life as well. Many of his pastimes involve sports, such as golf or basketball, and he has served as a physician for several sports teams at the high school, collegiate and professional levels.

Jason Fond is one of those lucky individuals who has been able to combine two passions in order to build a successful career.

Passing on His Medical Knowledge

Jason Fond knew from an early age that he wanted to practice medicine. After suffering a sports-related injury, Jason decided he wanted to be the one to help people. In 1987, Jason began his academic career and started down the path to becoming a doctor. In 2001, after successfully completing his sports medicine fellowship at Georgetown University, Dr. Fond started his own orthopedic sports medicine practice and began helping to alleviate people’s pain and helping them get back to a normal life.

After many successful years helping patients with surgical and non-surgical treatments, Dr. Jason Fond was recognized for his talent and dedication to the field. With his experience and vast knowledge of orthopedics, Dr. Fond was appointed an educator position at the Dominican College in New York. As an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Dr. Fond shares his knowledge and experience with the students as they pursue their academic endeavors. Dr. Fond has also taken on the role as team physician for the college’s many sports teams, addressing injuries the players incur during their sport and practice.

Dr. Jason Fond has enjoyed working with students and has taken up with St. Joseph’s Regional High School, in New Jersey as their team physician. Having grown up in New Jersey, Dr. Fond was happy to give back to the state and is glad he can impart his knowledge and wisdom to others. Dr. Fond plans to continue teaching and helping students in any way he can while continuing to provide his patients with the high-quality care he is known for.

An Interview with Dr. Jason Fond regarding Sports Medicine:

Question: Dr. Jason Fond, what are some of the more current topics in sports medicine?

Dr. Fond: Ligament injuries of the knee in young female athletes have become more common and because of the advancements in competitive play of female sports, especially at the high-school and college levels. These injuries can be devastating to an athlete. It’s important that female athletes participate in strength and conditioning programs prior to playing their sport of choice. Another of the more common injuries is elbow injury in baseball players. This has become prevalent due to the fact that players are pitching more during games. This then trains their elbows causing ligament tears.

Question: Dr. Fond why is Sports Medicine important?

Dr. Fond: Physical fitness in our country has become very popular and is now a way of life. People are more health conscious and strive to stay more active, healthy and fit as they age. As our population has become more active, more injuries have occurred, requiring services of a specialized sports medicine physician.

Question: Dr. Fond, do most patients require surgery?

Dr. Jason Fond: Many sports medicine injuries can be treated effectively with activity modification. With rest and rehabilitation many patients are able to recover fully without surgery. Surgery may be necessary if there is signif9icant structural damage or if the patient does not respond to conservative treatment. Many surgeries for sports injuries are currently performed with minimally invasive techniques allowing for a quick recovery.

An Interview with Dr. Jason Fond regarding his practice

Question: Dr. Jason Fond, why did your practice recently merge with other prominent practices in Rockland County?

Dr. Fond: In order to provide excellent care locally, multiple orthopedic practices in Rockland came together to form Northeast Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. By consolidating the subspecialties of orthopedic surgery, we’ve been able to provide outstanding care to the community.

Question: How does a patient benefit by going to a group practice?

Dr. Fond: There are multiple subspecialties in the field of orthopedic surgery. In a larger group practice, a patient can receive complete care with respect to any injury of the musculoskeletal system.

Question: Dr. Jason Fond, when a patient comes to your office how do you form your diagnosis?

Dr. Fond: The most important aspects of the patient evaluation involves taking a complete history and performing a thorough physical exam. The patient’s diagnosis can then typically be ascertained. However, imaging studies such as X-rays and MRIs are commonly required to confirm the diagnosis and plan for proper treatment including surgery.

Question: Dr. Fond, what do you love best about being an orthopedic surgeon?

Dr. Jason Fond: The most rewarding aspect of my profession is the ability to return injured patients to the activities they love. Patients who come to my office require a thorough evaluation and diagnosis, as well as treatment plan that may include surgery. Jason Fond: Giving Back

Jason Fond has enjoyed a successful career in the field of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. He feels that one of the greatest benefits of his successful career is that it gives him the opportunity to give back to the community that has helped him achieve so much.

Like many people, Jason Fond often donates to charitable organizations of various types, but one of the causes that is dear and near to his heart is the area of medical charity. Indeed, one of the reasons he decided to pursue medicine as a career was because it would give him an opportunity to make a positive impact on people's lives. In addition to donating his money to various medical charities, Jason Fond is also actively involved with the Bon Secours Charity Health System.

The Bon Secours Charity Health System was founded by a group of nuns who were devoted to caring for the sick and needy. Since the organization was founded in 1919, it has expanded a great deal. It currently employs more than 27,000 people in nine states across the United States.

Jason Fond currently serves as surgeon at one of the hospitals run by the Bon Secours Charity Health System. He treats children and adults in a wide variety of conditions related to orthopedics including joint reconstruction, fixation of complex fractures, hand trauma and pediatric injuries. Jason Fond takes great pleasure in the fact that his chosen career has enabled him to do so much good in the lives of so many people.

Jason Fond - Recovering from a Sports-Related Injury

An active child, Jason Fond loved participating in sports. He took part in several team-based activities including football, baseball, and basketball. Jason could also be found participating in a variety of other physical pursuits. However, as a teenager, Jason sustained a serious injury that jeopardized his future participation in sporting activities and other physical pursuits.

As a teenager, Jason Fond severely injured himself diving into a pool, causing him to question whether he would be able to participate in the sports he loved again and to ponder how the injury would affect his day-to-day life. To treat Jason’s injury and return his mobility, Jason underwent spinal surgery to have several of his vertebrae fused together. With extensive rehabilitation and continued treatment, Jason fully recovered from his injury and was able to return to his normal activities.

The injury Jason Fond suffered as a teenager profoundly impacted his life. The experience opened him up to the world of orthopedics and sports medicine and instilled in him a passion to help others. As a result, Jason chose a career in orthopedics and has since become an expert in his field. His practice, Northeast Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, is dedicated to treating patients with both surgical and non-surgical procedures. Jason applies the lessons he learned, during his time as a patient as an adolescent, to provide his patients with the highest quality care and exemplary bedside manner.

Jason’s reputation precedes him, and his patients couldn’t be happier with the attention and service they receive from Jason and the rest of the staff at Northeast Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.

We are living in an age of rapid technological advancements and growth. Everything from personal computers to cellphones has changed the way we learn, entertain, work and interact with the world around us. As a surgeon, Jason Fond is well aware of the impact that technology has on the medical profession, but while advances in surgery and other treatments often make the news, there are other ways in which technology is helping to change the face of healthcare.

One of the biggest ways in which technology is changing the healthcare field is simply how much easier communication between different hospitals has become. For example, one of the goals of President Obama's Affordable Care Act was to increase funding for hospitals to transfer patient records and other files to digital formats since many of them were still relying on hardcopies. This transition has made it easier than ever for doctors and other healthcare professionals to share patient records and other documents between medical centers.

Another benefit is that the Internet has provided patients with much more information regarding medical conditions and healthcare professionals. While you should never attempt to diagnose yourself, it can be useful to have an easy way to remind yourself of the common symptoms of your disorder along with the over-the-counter-medications that can treat it.

Jason Fond role as a surgeon has given him a keen understanding of the way technology affects the healthcare industry. While there will undoubtedly be some negative side effects, he ultimately feels that the increased access to information and communication will make things better for doctors and patients alike.
