Heart Shaped Box

1. To start, include a brief introduction to the song including its name, artist, genre, message and why you picked it.

The song I am analyzing is Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana. The genre is grunge. I picked this song because I really like Kurt Cobain and his lyrics are so powerful that I had to analyze at least one of his songs.

2. What message is the artist trying to send to you, the audience? What is the intended purpose or meaning of the song? Use quotations from your song to justify your answers.

The message that I think Kurt is trying to send to the audience is how Courtney Love got him addicted to drugs and how he wasn’t able to quit. I’m guessing that the heart shaped box he is talking about is a metaphor for his paraphernalia box. I also think that Heart Shaped Box has something to do with cancer. Different lyrics make me think of the song one way and then the other lyrics make me think another. The only person who really knows what the song is about is Kurt Cobain himself.

The lyrics “forever in debit to your priceless advice” makes me think that he is in debit because all the money he spent on drugs because Courtney was the one who got him addicted and it was her advice. “Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet” it seems like he is talking about how there is not a cure for cancer yet. There is meaning to the other lyrics in the song, of course but I’m not 100% sure what they are.

3. In writing this song, what audience do you think the artist is trying to reach/target? In other words, whom do you think the artist wrote the song for? Explain in full.

I think that Kurt Cobain wrote this song for Courtney Love. I do not really think that Kurt cared about the audience. He just wanted to make music; he did not really care if he had a big audience.

4. Who would you possibly not find the song appealing?

People who do not like grunge music would not like this song. Even people who do not like rock music would not like this song.

5. Do you think the music adds or takes away from what the artist is trying to say in the song? Explain. Do you think the official video for the song adds or takes away from the artist’s message? Explain.

I think the music adds to the song. The music is calming and it just goes perfectly with it. The official video for this song kind of takes away from the lyrics. There is so much going on in the video that it just does not work out so well.

9. He used to throw up before going on stage

10.He started smoking pot when he was a teenager

Nirvana's genre is grunge.

Kurt Cobain is my favorite performer because he actually puts meaning into his songs. He takes pride in what he does which is a very good quality to have. He is not just doing it to become famous or for the money, he is actually doing it  because its what he loves to do. A lot of people now are just in the music business for the money.

Although Kurt might sing about some messed up stuff it always seems to go with the music. He always wanted his band to be practicing, he at least wanted to be practicing five nights a week. From the videos and documentaries I have watched, Kurt seemed like a very funny guy. Kurt wanted the best for his wife and daughter and his band. He loved them all so much. Kurt was just an all around great guy.
