Chaining the Declaration of Independence

The reason Laurie Halse Anderson chose the Declaration of Independence to quote for chapters 34 to the ending was because both the book and the document had discussed the topic of gaining freedom from a higher power. The book had let the reader interpret the primary source to either connect it to Isabel and her experience as a slave, or to connect it to the Revolutionary war with America and Great Britain. The photo below represents the different levels of slavery within america in the 18th century. While patriots believed that they were "slaves" to the british, dark-skinned citizens were slaves to both the patriots and the loyalists. le
