-Bosnian Genocide-

1992-1995

You may think that nothing as horrible as the Holocaust could ever happen again. With all the laws and the past experiences people have had, you think they'd have learned twice. But the world is far from that. With all the people that were killed and harmed, the Genocides that happened in Bosnia were the worst since the Holocaust, and they happened only twenty years ago. Serbia wanted to “Ethnically Cleanse” Bosnia by systematically removing all Bosnian Muslims, known as Bosniaks. Since Bosniaks made up most of the population, it was endangering the entire country. This was all because they declared independence, and by only saying “Ethnically Cleanse” it seemed to the rest of the people attacking Bosniaks that they were doing a good deed and showing their superiority. even telling the people killing that it is okay since Bosniaks are less than them. The Serbian people thought themselves as a prouder race. Since being a Muslim was considered inferior, Bosniaks then were labeled as a pest, and Serbia even told the Serbian people that killing the Bosniaks it is okay, since Bosniaks are less than them.Serbia wanted to “Ethnically Cleanse” Bosnia by systematically removing all Bosnian Muslims, known as Bosniaks. A newspaper article from the time of this Genocide explains a section of the events.

During this Genocide, other countries such as Yugoslavia joined in on Serbia. In 1992, Miloševic used forces from Yugoslavia to help invade Eastern Bosnia, and they did this two days after Bosnia declared independence.  So when Serbia killed Bosniaks, Yugoslavia did too. Yugoslavia was in support of the attacks on Bosnia because when Bosnia declared its independence, Yugoslavia also agreed with Miloševic when he said that the Bosniaks needed to be eliminated.

This genocide is important because it portrayed a country against itself, and it shows how that a country can turn against itself. It also showed common genocide ideas, such as saying that there was an issue with a certain race or religion, and mass murdering them. The Bosniaks were also mistreated and thought of less because of their Religion. It showed how another Holocaust can happen if people are not too careful. The international community did little to prevent the horrible events committed against Bosniaks while they were happening. In May 1993, the U.N. Security Council created the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY,) and it was the first Genocide trial since the Nuremberg Trials. This genocide is important because it portrayed a country against itself, and it shows how that a country can turn against itself.
