1) Profile of Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro was a Marxist Cuban political leader that helped lead the Cuban Revolution and served as president of Cuba from 1976-2008. Castro was born near BirĂ¡n, Cuba, on August 13, 1926. He studied law at the University of Havana then later attend Harvard's school of law Fidel Castro is best known for never giving up and always being enthusiastic about the tasks he wished to achieve. In 1959, Castro used guerrilla warfare to successfully overthrow Cuban leader Batista, and was sworn in as prime minister of Cuba. He served as prime minister until 1976, when he became president of Cuba. Under his administration the Republic of Cuba became a one-party socialist state; industry and business were nationalized, and state socialist reforms were implemented throughout society. Castro  was also part of an anti communist party that was formed with the aim of exposing government corruption, developing strategies to gain economic independence and implement social reform in Cuba. His ruthless streak is best known by eliminating peoples' freedom. Castro soon became hated, and thousands fled. Poverty rose, and this caused for true unhappiness by the people.

2) Audio/Visual/Artistic Element

This video is a great representation of who Fidel Castro was and his dictatorship qualities. In the video it states that Fidel Castro was educated early on in his life, and used his intelligence to generate success. For example, Castro was considered a "hero" to his people because he successfully deployed thousands of troops to africa, provided free medical for his people and redistributed farmland.  There was a quote stated, "He was the symbol of hope to the lower class". On the other hand, this video also highlights his weaknesses as a dictator. Castro made his country feel the wrath of food shortages and the economic collapse. This then resulted in thousands fleeing to the southern part of the United States. His power was put into question by many, concluding that he had many successes and failures.

3) Creative Piece

Dear Son,

I could not be more proud of what you have accomplished for the country of Cuba. It is remarkable that you gained independence for the Republic of Cuba and gave hope to the lower class. Your mother and I took drastic measures to give you the best education and it has shown to pay off. Although you have become ill and no longer are serving as president, we hope your brother can live up to your remarkable standards. We also expect him to fix your mistakes. One being that your brother helps strengthen and better Cuba's economy. I envy your strength, enthusiasm, hard work and determination. You are my hero. Not everyone is perfect, as I'm sure you did not intend for food shortages or citizens fleeing. Hopefully you get better soon so you can watch your brother turn that around. It has been an honor to see you be quite successful through out your journey, although you have failed at times. Your mother, siblings and I wish you a speedy recovery so you can watch Cuba grow even more.

With love always,
