At the entrance of Auschwitz there is a gate that says "Arbeit Macht Frei" in english this means "Work Makes You Free"

"After the start of World War II, Adolf Hitler, the chancellor of Germany, implemented a policy known as the “Final Solution.” Hitler was determined not just to isolate Jews in Germany and countries annexed by the Nazis, subjecting them to dehumanizing regulations and random acts of violence. Instead, he became convinced that his “Jewish problem” would be solved only with the elimination of every Jew in his domain, along with artists, educators, Gypsies, communists, homosexuals, the mentally and physically handicapped and others deemed unfit for survival in Nazi Germany"(

Auschwitz was a was a network of German Nazi concentration camps and extermination camps built and operated by the Third Reich in Polish areas controlled by Nazi Germany during World War II.  The camps were used to detain the Jews, put them to work, and when they could not work any more they were killed.  The means of killing the jews were terrible and inhumane.  Gas and torture were used to dehumanize the jews and treat them as animals.

This image shows the number of fatalities each of the different camps had.  Whether they were work camps, detention centers, or death camps, the numbers are horrifying.
