History of Printmaking

Hannah Cho MYP Art 10 Block G

Printmaking was originally used for making mass copies of text. Woodblock printing originated in China, but the first full document was printed in Korea in 750.

A woodblock is a wooden block with engraved letters and pictures carved inversely for the  purpose of printing. The oldest woodblock printing in the world is a copy of  the Mugujeonggwang Daedaranigyeong (Spotless Pure Light Dharani Sutra), found at a temple in Gyeongju, capital of the Silla Kingdom (Korea).

Evolution of Printmaking

Although print making was originally used for printing Buddhist scriptures, fine art printmaking became established during the German Renaissance (1430-1580). Artists in Europe made images accessible to people outside of the wealthy by using woodcuts to depict religious objects, illustrate books and reproduce paintings. The field advanced in 1796 when German playwright Alois Senefelder discovered Lithography. Artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse embraced and further developed printmaking techniques. These are some examples of German Expressionist Woodcuts.

Important things to Remember when Printing

The prints are mirror images of the block. Remember to reverse words, type, or numbers!

Do not use more ink than necessary! When inking with a brayer: You will hear a quiet hissing sound when rolling the brayer if you have the right amount of ink.
