The Set Designer...........

The Set for the 1986 musical production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera was designed by Maria Björnson. Maria was in 1949, born to a Romanian mother, Mia Prodan and a Norwegian father, Bjorn Bjornson who was 20 years his wife's senior. She and her mother over to London in 1950 after her father had left her mother. Maria went to school in London at a variety of places including at a Catholic convent and a French school. She then later further continued her studies at the Glen Byam Shaw School. After that she continued onto the Central School of Art Design, where under noted designer Ralph Koltai, she studied. Some of her most notable set designs were for Macbeth(1997), Sleeping Beauty (1994), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof(2001) and Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of The Opera(1986) for which she won the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design.
