What is Mythology, and why did Greeks/Romans use it?

Mythology is a collection of myths/stories. They belong to a certain religion, or civilization (Greek Mythology, etc.)

Greeks used mythology for many reasons. It was part of their religion, and they used it to explain creation. To them, it was real. Greeks and Romans used it to satisfy their need for role models.

Who was Apollo?

Apollo is the god of light and the sun, truth and prophecy, healing, plague, music, poetry, and more. He is the son of Zeus and Leto. His twin sister is Artemis, the goddess of hunt.

Romans also called him Apollo, but sometimes would refer to him as Apollen, Phoebus Apollo, or Phoebus.

Like many gods, Apollo did not hesitate to be involved in human affairs. For instance, Apollo helped Hector's brother, Paris, slay Achilles with an arrow. It was said that when someone died suddenly, he was shot by Apollo's arrow.

Since Apollo was the god of music, he played the lyre. He won several music contests. In one of them, King Midas said that Pan was better than Apollo, and Apollo turned his ears into one of a donkey's.

Colchian Dragon

Also known as Drakon Kholkikos, this dragon was an ever-wakeful, giant serpent that guarded the golden fleece in the sacred grove of Ares at Kolkhis. When Jason and the Argonauts came to fetch the fleece, the beast was either slain by the hero or put to sleep by the witch Media.

The Gift of Fire

At first, Zeus was  disappointed with humans. He decided he was not going to give mankind a most important tool - fire! Without fire, humans were going to struggle to live.

Prometheus, a titan who became friends with the human race ,felt sorry for them. Without fire, humans would be unable to do many things, such as  making  heat and cooking. So, Prometheus stole a lightning bolt from Zeus and gave it to mankind. That's when people "discovered" fire.

When Zeus found out, he was extremely angry. He chained Prometheus to a rock for stealing his lightning bolt, and for helping  the humans. Also, Zeus sent storms to beat sea waves against Prometheus, chained to his rock. He also  made the sunlight bright and scorching  sometimes to burn his skin. He even sent an eagle to peck at Prometheus' body. Zeus punished him harshly because Prometheus had defied Zeus, and that was what angered Zeus so greatly.

Finally, Hercules  released the helpless god-a thousand years later!By then, Zeus no longer cared if anyone rescued Prometheus or not.

Modern Day Connection

The Phoenix,a mythical bird that burns after living a 100 years and then rises from its ashes, is also the name of a national photographic technology company, and many other companies.
