Quote:

The United States continues to have a high rate of teenage pregnancy, substantially higher than that seen in other developed countries. The main cause appears to be a lack of comprehensive sex education for students. Studies show that abstinence-only education rarely has a positive effect on teen sexual activity and, in fact, actually increases the teen pregnancy rate.

Paraphrase:

The United States has an especially high teen pregnancy for a developed country. The cause appears to be a lack of comprehensive sex education despite the fact that studies have proven that an abstinence only curriculum rarely has a positive effect on teen sexual activity but also increases teen pregnancy rates.

My Ideas:

This quote directly supports my opinion that abstinence only should not only be discouraged but removed from all curricula in the United States.

Texas ranks number one in teenage births, costing taxpayers there over $1 billion a year. And 24 percent of those births are not the girl's first delivery.

Paraphrase:

Texas requires abstinence only programs. Texas also ranks number one nationally in teenage births which in turn costs taxpayers over 1 billion dollars annually. This is important considering that many people that support abstinence-only education claim that it helps to lower teen pregnancy rates but obviously that is not the case. Not only that but it is also wasting taxpayer dollars.
