When people think about heroes they think about certain people with Superpowers, people that can do things that other people can not do, or people that save lives that are in danger. However this not the only kind of hero. There is a less popular kind of hero. A hero like Ponyboy Curtis. Who goes on a Hero’s Journey and returns as a person with a gift. In the Realistic Fiction Novel by S.E.Hinton the character Ponyboy goes on a Hero’s Journey because he travels through the three phases of a monomyth.
Ponyboy experiences The Separation from the known when he is hit by his older brother Darry.Pony runs from his house and meets Johnny in the park then some Socs came by to beat them up for taking their girls. During the fight Johnny pulls out a switchblade and kills Bob the Soc, Johnny tells Pony he killed Bob when Pony asks,“You really killed him huh Johnny?’ ‘yeah, Johnny’s voice quavered Slightly”(57). In the Hero’s Journey, The Separation from the Known is when the hero Pony found out that Johnny killed Bob and go for help. In the Outsiders, the quotation that was chosen for the threshold of Adventure is an example of his experience because the text says that Pony and Johnny get jumped by some Socs ending up in the killing of Bob and them running for help this shows that this is evidence of the threshold because Dally acts like a threshold guardian by helping Johnny and Pony and showing them the way to safety.
Ponyboy experiences The Initiation when Johnny,Dally, and Pony see a burning church, with children trapped inside they go in and save them which results in all of them getting burns but Johnny turning up with third-degree burns. Ponyboy Narrates,“It was Johnny Pony was worried about the most in critical condition. His back had been broken when that piece of timber fell on him.He was in severe shock and suffering from 3rd degree burns”(103). In the Hero’s Journey, the first part of The Initiation is when the hero Pony and his friends all get burns while saving the children from the church. In The Outsiders, the text directly says that Johnny had received more severe burns than Dally or Pony which the author explains in the text. This is an example of The Initiation (part 1) because it shows that Pony is acting heroically by saving the kids from burning to death in the church and because it is a challenge to go inside a burning church because Pony had think about his life and the childrens lives.
Ponyboy continues to experience The Second Part of the Initiation when He changes his view on Darry. When Darry starts to cry when he and Soda are about to take Pony home, “Suddenly I realized, horrified, that darry was crying,He didn’t ,make a sound, but I hadn’t seen him cry in years, not even when mom and dad had been killed”(98). In the Hero’s Journey, the second part of The Initiation is when the hero Pony sees Darry crying when he and Soda get him from the hospital. In The Outsiders,Pony is worried and horrified when Darry starts to cry because he didn’t understand why Darry was crying this is evidence of Pony going through the second part of The Initiation because he changes his view on his brother Darry and realizes that Darry cares about him.
Ponyboy experiences The Return to Everyday Life when Pony gets new knowledge about life.Pony learns that everybody should get along because he realizes that it doesn't matter who you are because we're all equal, when Johnny died he found a slip of paper inside a book which said that Johnny felt that his life wasn’t worth more than the childrens lives and that he thought that it was good that he saved them and when Dally died Pony says that Dally never knew the meaning of life, “Someone should tell their side of the story and maybe people would understand then and wouldn’t be so quick to judge a boy by the amount of hair oil he wore”(179).In the Hero’s Journey,The Return to Everyday Life is when the hero Pony realizes that nobody should judge each other and to be fair.In The Outsiders Ponyboys gift is Knowledge to the world that nobody should judge eachother of how thet look or how they are.Pony received this knowledge when he saw his two friends Johnny and Dally die in front of him.
In conclusion,The Book The Outsiders by S.E.Hinton shows that Pony went on a Hero’s Journey because he goes through all the steps of a Monomyth,Pony gets Jumped by Socs,He get hit by His brother,he runs away, and comes back a new person. This book reveals a message within itself because it tells us not to judge anybody and to always be nice to each other.
