Characters

Odysseus - He's a warrior ,the husband of Queen Penelope, and the father of Telemachus .

Eurynome - He was very helpful for among the people by providing them food and shelter. He also was helpful to Odysseus by reclaiming his title after he return home from Ithaca.

Athene - She was Zeus' daughter who was a goddess of wisdom that helped Odysseus and Telemachus with holy powers throughout the epic .

Zeus - He was Odysseus' helper and was the king of gods and men.

Artemis - She was the daughter of Zeus.

Aphrodite - She took care of the Pandareus' daughters.

Quote & It's Value

  " May heaven requite to them the wickedness with which they deal highhandedly in another man's house without any sense of shame " .    - Odysseus

   The purpose or meaning of this quote was to express Odysseus hope of the evil people that he dealt with without any shame.

  This quote is important because it came from the father of Telemachus  and he is very significant to his kingdom . It shows that be have faith in all of his people regardless of their lifestyle.

Plot

    Odysseus is having a hard time sleeping because he's stressing about being the only one man. Athena tells him he has nothing to worry about as long as she's there for him .Penelope wasn't sleeping good as well ,so she decided to pray to Artemis that she would be killed rather than marrying a suitor. Throughout her prayer, she sees a vision of Odysseus crying. The crying of Penelope disturbed Odysseus which made him pray to Zeus asking for a sign. Zeus hears his prayer and replies with a sound of thunder that  relieved Odysseus. Telemachus awakes and goes to Eurykleia questioning about the guest care . Telemachus demanded the maids to clean up before the suitors return.

     Later, a suitor, Agelaus, tells Telemachus that it is clear that his father will never return and that his mother should be married. Telemachus replies that he is not stopping his mother's marriage ,but he will not force her. Theoklymenos warns them that he sees a threat of evil  for all of them ,and he leaves. The suitors try to motivate Telemachus but he ignores them. Penelope watches everything but remains silent.

Theme

You should always have faith in yourself and others. It shows you have a good heart and reliable to people. In the book page 282, it states '' May heaven requite to them the wickedness with which they deal highhandedly in another man's house without any sense of shame " , says Odysseus. He's expressing how much hope he has in his people regardless of their way of living. He shows he wants others to become better and gradually improve.

Figurative Language

Page 286 - " There is a shroud of darkness drawn over you from head to feet; your cheeks are wet with tears; the air is alive with wailing voices; the walls and roof beams drip blood the entrance of the house and the court beyond it are full of ghosts trooping down into the night of hell; the sun is blotted out of heaven, and an evil mist is over all the land."

Personification: A figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to an animal or an object.
Example: The air is alive with wailing voices.

Hyperbole  An exaggeration that is so dramatic that no one would believe the statement is true.

Example: Roof beams drip blood the entrance of the house.

Example: There is a shroud of darkness drawn over you from head to feet.

Example: The court is beyond it are full of ghosts trooping down into the night of hell.

Example: An evil mist is over all the land.

  The purpose of the author using figurative language was to be more creative in his writing and make to book more interesting.
