Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper
                     Lila and Katelyn

Out of My Mind is about a girl named Melody. Melody has Cerebral Palsy. She is in the 5th grade. Melody tells us a story about her life and the big events that happen in it.

Mom took Melody to the doctor to see if she was ready to start school. During the test the doctor was being rude to Melody. So mom got angry and stood up for Melody and yelled at the doctor.

The school Melody goes to is Spaulding Street Elementary. She introduces us all her disabled friends at school. Mom came to school because the teacher called her and said , Melody is having a tantrum and everyone is getting loud. When mom got up there she was mad that the teacher was only on the letter B in the alphabet. Mom was so mad she broke one of the teacher's CD and gave her $5 and they have been in school since August.

Melody got a new puppy she named, Butterscotch. Butterscotch stays with Melody all the time at home. Melody's mom had a baby girl, Penny, that takes up a lot of time at home. Penny takes a lot of time away from Melody.

Melody is frustrated because she can't communicate with people. Now she finally can with the new MediTalker. Mrs. V is helping Melody put more and more vocabulary in the MediTalker everyday. She now can finally tell her parents," I love you." Her dad videoed her saying her first words.

Melody got all the questions correctly the whiz kidz pre-test. Now, she is trying out for the whiz kidz team. On the test she got all the questions correct on the test. Even though Mr.Dimming called her stupid. Melody is practicing everyday and night since she is on the school whiz team. Melody's school won the city competition. Her team is now going to Washington for the finals, but Her team left her on a earlier flight when theirs was canceled.

The next morning it was storming and raining hard. Melody still insisted on going to school so the kids wouldn't think Melody was on the losing team when they got 9th place. When mom was trying to get in the car, dad brought them the umbrella then he went back in with Penny. Then Penny darted out of the door, running behind the car. Melody noticed Penny and started kicking and screaming, throwing a tornado. Her mom was frustrated and had a headache and slapped Melody. Then Melody got settled down and mom hit Penny on accident. Penny ended up with 2 broken legs but she is okay and can walk.

Melody- Character Traits

Melody describes the place she is at by the way the place looks, sounds, and the way it smells like. She tells us her emotional feelings about the place she is at. Melody is very good at describing her school. She describes it with pink and yellow walls with butterflies, rainbows, and smiley faces.  Melody is sarcastic. The reason we know this is because the text tells us, " Claire can be clueless," she whispers to me " you think." I think Melody is also humorous and smart because the text tells us " She tells dirty jokes when Dad isn't listening, and we both crack up." We know she is smart because the text says," I memorized them all."

Cerebral Palsy

Do you know what Cerebral Palsy is? Cerebral Palsy is a disorder that is not curable and is not contagious. We are reading a book called Out Of My Mind by Sharon Draper. This book is about a girl named Melody who has Cerebral Palsy. She can't talk or walk or communicate. She has a very serious case of Cerebral Palsy.

Are you familiar with the disorder Cerebral Palsy? Cerebral Palsy is a disorder that has no cure and is not contagious. People with Cerebral Palsy can have three types of Cerebral Palsy. These types are spastic, ataxic, and athetoid. Cerebral Palsy is a disorder that has to do with the brain and the way the body works and moves.

Children maybe born with Cerebral Palsy during pregnancy and some develop soon after birth. Cerebral Palsy is most common for premature babies that are born weeks before their due date. Some symptoms are not being able to relax, balance, coordinate, walk, talk, and sometimes speak. Also, kids may have more severe cases of Cerebral Palsy than others. Some children can't even sit up on their own.

There can be more serious cases of Cerebral Palsy than others. Some kids are so severe they can't talk, and have no choice but to be in a wheelchair. Others aren't as severe and they might have to have crutches or braces. Some kids that can't talk just get a speech machine to talk for them.

Some famous people who have Cerebral Palsy are Geri Jewell, Abby Nicole Curran, RJ Mitte. Geri Jewell is an author of a book called I'm Walking as Straight as I Can. Abby Nicole Curran won Miss USA in 2008. RJ Mitte  has acted in the TV series Breaking Bad. He is also a spokesman for some actors with disabilities.

Melody's home is important to her because she spends a lot of time their, and she loves to watch everything that happens there. Melody also enjoys the music her parents play for her on the radio. Her dog and Penny, her sister, always cheer her up. Whenever Melody falls out of her wheelchair Butterscotch gets Melody's parents attention.

Melody's school is important to her because she now has inclusion instead of staying in room H-5 with rainbows, smiley faces, and butterflies. Melody has her own aid names Cathrine who helps her with reading her schoolwork and helps her learn. Melody has a new best friend name Rose that does a lot of things with her. Now she has the ability to talk with her friends with the meditalker. She has now made the school WhizQuiz team.

Mrs. V's house is important to Melody because she goes there everyday after school. Mrs. V helps Melody with her meditalker and to study. Melody really likes Mrs. V because she understands her. She also tells Melody she can do anything. Melody learns more and more vocabulary everyday. Melody enjoys going to Mrs. V's house everyday.

Point of View

This book is written in 1st person. The reason we know this is because the text tells us," Well, I didn't get a gadget that makes Garfield-like speech bubbles over my head, but I did get an electric wheelchair, and our school began something called "inclusion classes," the text also tells us," I thought that was funny. I've never have been included in anything." " I am very smart. I am though. I am here to take a test."

The theme of Out of My Mind is, don't judge a book by its cover because Melody is very intelligent but most people think she doesn't look intelligent. The text we have to support this is Melody made the Whiz Kidz Team. Her team got 1st place in the city competition because of Melody. She is now taking regular test like the "normal" kids at her school, and Mr. Dimming was surprised how many questions Melody got right.
