3 Great Things!

April 2014
Relax Summer's almost here ...

Summer is almost here, faculty and students, even if they teach or take summer courses, are so close to a relative break, they can taste it. There are steps faculty can take now and throughout the summer to prepare for and re-energize before fall courses arrive.

In this issue of 3 Great Things! you'll find resources to help you relax, and then re-energize your online teaching efforts.

Great Thing #1

Before heading out on summer vacation do a few things to set you and and your students up for success. Prep your fall online/hybrid courses, insure all administrative tasks are taken care of and that all links are working as planned and all dates are updated (don't forget to check cut-off and due dates for assignments, quizzes and discussion forums). Then consider some of these strategies to re-energize your teaching for the fall: http://www.facultyfocus.com/articles/online-education/10-ways-to-re-energize-your-classes-and-yourself/

Great Thing # 2

Take the summer break, or at least the summer slow down, and try a new technology these articles are a good place to start:

Top 100 Tools for Learning: http://c4lpt.co.uk/top100tools/

26 Web Apps for College Students: http://www.lifehack.org/articles/technology/26-web-apps-every-college-student-needs.html.

What new tools can you bring to fall classes to capture student attention, promote learning and bring energy and enthusiasm to your courses?

Great Thing #3:

Google Apps and Drive are great tools for faculty and students- take some time this summer and experiment to see what's new there. See the March issue of 3 Great Things!:

And try out some great Google search hacks to get the most out of your searches:

Now that you've prepped courses for the fall and tried a new technology, and summer is so close you can feel the sand between your toes, take some time away from the computer, get outside or out of your comfort zone and try something new. Go somewhere new, learn to cook something new or exotic, perfect a skill, do whatever it is that makes summer fun and restores your energy for teaching.

Bonus Great Thing! Don't forget there are professional development opportunities that you can complete this summer before heading back to the mad rush of fall courses.
