Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts

Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts is located in Austin, Texas. They teach you about cooking and how to cook. The school has been around over a hundred years. In-state tuition is $12,567. About 1,000 to 5,000 students enroll and 440 students graduate every year.

I chose this college because it is in the state and not that far. It is not too expensive. This school will teach me how to cook better and tricks when cooking.

Campus Life

This school has an on campus restaurant. It is run by the students who prepare and serve the meals. This restaurant is also opened to the public and is name Technique. Technique helps you put your skills to the test before going out to work. This learning experience lets you work in all parts of the restaurant and also teaches you management and marketing. After you graduate from the school, you become an alum and can be in the alumni association. It helps you stay connected with students and the school.

The career I would like to be in is Culinary Arts. I want to study in Culinary Arts because I enjoy cooking and I cook at home also.  Since I basically know how to cook, I think I'll do good in this school. They will teach me more to cooking that I may or may not know, though. Culinary artists have different positions such as chefs and culinarians but usually referred to culinary artists. Some culinary artists specialize in a specific region of food; Italian, Japanese, Korean. I want to specialize in making Italian food because the appearance of the meal always look so nice. Culinary artists also have different duties around the restaurant. For example, chefs are responsible for the menus, creating meals, and follow classic dish recipes. A chef also prepares the food and is in charge for measuring and weighing incredients.

Chefs get paid differently depending on their experience level. Median wage gets paid $9.96 hourly and $20,720 annually. While experienced wage gets paid $11.65 hourly and $24,240 annually. Some tasks chefs do are preparing dishes according to the recipe, clean and cut fish and meant, wash and prepare fruits and vegetables, use deep fryers, ovens, grills, keep kitchen equipment clean, supervise workers and order supplies. A high school diploma is usually needed for this kind of job. Some high schools offer programs to help the students follow their career. Although, it is better if you go to college before you apply to a job. Culinary arts school usually lasts about a few months to two years.

Primary Source

Cooks prepare many different dishes and have to be able to make them all or work somewhere specializing on a type of food. They have to be able to work under pressure since a lot of people are waiting for their food to be served. Many cooks start working at fast food restaurant and later move on up. Cooks with more experience work at hospitals, schools, or full-service restaurants. At full-service restaurants the recipes are more difficult and have a variety. All cooks perform simple things such as washing and cutting vegetables and meat, cleaning equipment, and plan menus. Most cooks work shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Occupational hazards include burns and cuts. Cooks usually stand for extended periods of time and may have to lift heavy objects, such as pots and large bags of potatoes. Though their workplace is usually clean and well lit, it can be hot and crowded.
