Mobile Apps for K-12

Personal Mobile Learning

Technology used as a teaching aid in the classroom.

The use of technology in the classroom allows teachers to help all of their students achieve their educational goals and needs. I've researched, and listed below, 5 apps that I feel aid student learning in K-12 classrooms.

World Data Atlas

What is it?

World Data Atlas is an app that provides world and regional statistics, national data, maps, and rankings on every country in the world. This app also allows you to export the data (to a pdf, excel, etc.) all in one easy click! The app also has an interactive map that allows you to see how much a country has changed over the years (economically, physically, etc.). Check out their video below.

How can it be used?

World Data Atlas can be downloaded onto Google Chrome, and used at home (or any place of convenience) by students. This app is useful for students and, of course, [social studies] teachers that require dependable data/statistics (for lessons, projects, etc.).

Anatronica - 3D Interactive Anatomy

What is it?

Anatronica is an interactive Chrome app that allows the user to study the human anatomy using an advanced 3D interface. This app makes it easier to navigate the human body in an easy and fun way, and to investigate the complex anatomical structures of the human body. Check out the app website by clicking the screenshot below.

How can it be used?

Students can download this app on their mobile devices and explore the human anatomy in 3D. This is helpful for students that learn better via visual aids (vs. text and auditory), and it makes learning more interactive and fun. Teachers can also use this app as a tool in their lessons, which could help keep the student's attention if they are distracted easily. This is a very useful app in science/biology classrooms.

Duolingo

What is it?

Duolingo is a Chrome app that helps users learn new languages free of charge. Duolingo provides users with the opportunity to help translate the web into different languages, all while learning and [possibly] competing with friends, leveling up, etc.. As of now, Duolingo offers courses in only a handful of languages including Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, and English. Check out the informational video on Duolingo below.

How can it be used?

Teachers in Language classes such as French and Spanish (which are often offered in public schools) can use Duolingo in their lessons to help make learning a new language more interactive and fun. Students can compete with each other, even outside of classrooms, so they are constantly learning.

Algebra Lessons
by MathPapa.com

What is it?

This Chrome app helps students better understand algebra and how to solve algebraic equations with step-by-step explanations. This is an interactive app that offers extra practice for math students. Check out the app website by clicking the screenshot below.

How can it be used?

Students can download Algebra Lessons by MathPapa.com onto their mobile devices, and use the interactive app at their leisure. Math teachers can also use this app in their lessons, so that the students have some familiarity with the app at home.

TapToTalk

What is it?

TapToTalk is a mobile app that allows users to communicate with others by simply clicking on the images that are pre-customized. A user can customize their account in TapToTalk Designer which is online, and available on any devices connected to the internet. Using the TapToTalk Designer, you can select/upload any picture, add text to the picture, and even add your own voice using the voice recorder. To make this app even more accessible, customized albums can be in any language. Watch the TapToTalk instructional video below.

How can it be used?

TapToTalk is an amazing tool that aids in communication for students that require such help. For example, students with autism (and other mental or physical disabilities), can use pre-customized accounts of TapToTalk to communicate their thoughts and ideas independently. This apps significantly reduces communicational/educational barriers between such students and teachers.
