Manifest Destiny

  1. Manifest Destiny is a term for the attitude prevalent during the 19th century period of American expansion that the United States not only could, but was destined to, stretch from coast to coast. This attitude helped fuel western settlement, Native American removal and war with Mexico.
  2. People moved west for the Westward Expansion because of Land, Access, Religious Freedom, Economic Prosperity, and Force.
  3. John L. O'Sullivan coined the phrase "Manifest Destiny".
  4. The "right" was based on a racial belief that Americans were superior.
