Poe had 1 brother, William Henry Leonard Poe who was a poet, and his sister, Rosalie Poe who was a penmanship at Richardson's school of girls. His parents died when he was really young. He then moved in with a wealthy tobacco merchant, John Allan, and his wife, Frances Valentine Allan.


In 1826, Poe, attended the University of Virginia. He made really good grades in his classes at the University, but he was in bad debt. The Allan's only gave him 1/3 of the money he needed so he took to gambling to get the rest of the money. By the end of the semester, he was in so much debt that he had to burn his furniture to keep warm.


Poe eventually came out with his book, Tamerlane, and published it. Then Frances Allan, his only mother died.

Poe made the magazine, "The Messenger" popular. He made his living right then to be a magazine writer.
