~ The climate was warm and moist which was perfect for growing crops. There was also good, cleared land and a mild climate meant that the people living in the southern colonies grew staple and exotic crops for the cash market.

~ The tidewater left minerals on the tideland, which made the soil fertile. Also the southern colonies were farther south, which meant the growing season was longer.

~ Major Industry: Plantation agriculture (indigo, rice, tobacco)
~Virginia was the first successful English colony. Virginia and Maryland’s major cash crop was tobacco. Those tobacco seeds became the seeds of a huge economic empire.
