Background Information

Tang Dynasty

-618CE to 907CE

-China's "Golden Age"; lots of intellectual and artistic achievements, big part of Chinese culture

-Taizong (emperor) expanded China's borders westward.

-Chinese tried to invade Korea, but Korea attacked back, so Chinese retreated in 645CE.

-Taizong had low taxes, and believed in Confucianism.

-Art and Poetry took over, so people rebelled and the imperial government weakened, eventually the empire fell.

Song Dynasty

-960CE to 1279CE

-The Song dynasty got divided into two groups, the Northern Song and the Southern Song.

-The Northern Song was ruled by Zhao Kuangyin. Zhao Kuangyin invaded empires in the North and built a massive powerful army.

-Kuangyin had lots of technological Yinnovations which he combined with his military tactics.

-Trade was advanced and Confucianism grew bigger than ever. The Song dynasty fell because of an invasion in the Southern Song by the Mongols.

Yuan Dynasty (known as the Mongols)

-1206CE to 1368CE

-Genghis Khan, great ruler of Mongols, was a very skilled ruler and expanded the Mongol territory from the Caspian Sea to Beijing.

-The Mongols took over lots of other empires and were excellent horsemen.

-The Mongol empire split into four separate empires; Chagatai Khanate, Khanate of the Golden Horde, Ilkhanate, and the Yuan dynasty.

Ming Dynasty

-1368CE to 1644CE

-Hongwu (Zhu Yuanzhang), emperor and was the leader of the group who took over Mongols.

-The empires goals were to restart China's sovereignty and Chinese traditions. Yongle (next emperor after Hongwu) included a navy in China's strong military.

-The Ming dynasty ended up in lots of wars which they didn't have enough money for, the last emperor hanged himself, and the Ming were invaded.
