Rally Racing! The background and cost!
Rally racing is a very fun and dangerous sport to watch and race in. Rally is getting from point A to point B in the fastest time possible over all kinds of terrain such as snow, dirt, mud, etc. Most rally racers use cars that are inexpensive, get good gas mileage, and cars you can upgrade majorly such as the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, Dodge Dart SXT Rallye edition, And the Ford Fiesta. These cars may cost not as much as you think, but its what goes into upgrading them is what is costly. One example of a major upgrade that most rally car drivers do is take a car such as a Ford Fiesta which is FWD (front wheel drive) which means that the front wheels is what pulls the car and makes it go forward, and turn it into a 4WD (four wheel drive) which means that all of tires are pulling the car and making it move, but not at the exact same time as AWD (all wheel drive) does which is all the tires move at the same time and make the car go. This is a major upgrade to the cars themselves and a very costly upgrade, but it helps out with traction and grip and turning and making corners which is very important when trying to get the fastest time possible and keeping the car from spinning out or crashing. Another costly upgrade that goes into all of these cars is the transmissions they have. These are expensive to upgrade because of what you have to do to them. Since Rally is getting the fastest time possible, you need the power from your engine right there or get the power quickly. To do this the rally racers need to fix the transmission in such a way that you get power quickly, but sacrifice your top speed which is not always needed, especially if there is no straight away and need to get that much speed. So the transmission in these cars are geared very low and the space between the gears horizontally is shortened a lot then your typical space. This makes you to be able to shift fast and almost sequentially so you can change gears quickly and not waste time trying to shift. However, even though the gears may be shortened, the time that you go from 0 to 60 is crazy. One person's car that he drives, it goes from 0 to 60 in 1.8 seconds! that's faster then a Bugatti! Besides these costly upgrades, there are other upgrades that you can make that can be costly. these include engine upgrades, safety equipment etc. Sometimes, costs for upgrading these cars is insane. For example, Rally racing champion Ken Block spent over 500,000 dollars on his car! Overall, rally racing is fun to watch and race in. However, it can be costly!
