Confused about life
Montag is very unhappy at the beginning of the story because is starting to not know what he wants in his life. He second guesses everything with Clarisse, and even his wife Mildred. He thinks that Clarisse's way of life is refreshing. He's unhappy because he lacks human connection. Montag and Mildred have nothing in common. Her attempt at killing herself just shows how she gets treated. Once he watches the old women burn with her books he realizes what the value they might have.
Courage is one of the heroic qualities that Montag possesses. Throughout the book he shows that he has the courage to do the right thing, even though the odds are against him. In this novel no one cares about the old lady and Montag creates suspicion.
