BALKANIZATION

WHAT IS BALKANIZATION?

It is a political process by which a state divides itself into smaller countries

HOW IT CAME ABOUT

Balkanization started first when the Balkans, part of Europe's Balkan Peninsula, divided into smaller states under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. After the Balkans had gained their independence, other countries started fragmenting and becoming their own states. Though, not all attempts were successful, and this became widely popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.
