By: Ani Marenova
Distance: Spica is the 16th brightest star in the night sky. It is about 260 light- years away from earth.
Color: Spica has a blue-white color.
Size: Spica is about 7.4 times larger than the sun, so it has a radius of 5,150,400 km
Temperature: It has a temperature of 22,400 K.
~Spica is the brightest star in the constellation Virgo.
~Spica is a close binary star.
~Scientists and Researchers have done many observational studies on Spica.
~Spica is the 15th brightest star in the sky and it one of the nearest stars to our sun.
Spica is a Binary System meaning that there are up to 3 other components in this star system. They orbit around the barycenter also known as the common center of mass and it is as quick as four days. The bodies are so close we are not able to see them apart with our telescopes.
We know this because of the observations of the Doppler shift in the absorption lines. The rotation rate of both of he stars is faster than their mutual orbital period. This lack of proportion and ellipticity of their orbit shows that it is a young star system. And over time, interactions tend to lead to orbit circularization.
