Genius hour 2

by: Katrina Kittle

The book I read was called "Reasons to be Happy" by Katrina Kittle. In this story, Hannah an eighth grade girl is trying her hardest to fit in with every body and everything in her life. With her two famous hollywood parents, she feels like the ugly one in the family. With her mother dying from cancer & her dad in grief from the situation, she decides to turn to controlling her weight by becoming bulimic. Now with moving in with her aunt she is going to be trying very hard to love herself when she feels like nobody else can.

How Many People Are Expected to Die of Cancer This Year?

In 2015, about 589,430 Americans are expected to die of cancer, or 1,620 people per day. Cancer is the second most common death in the U.S.

How does this relate to my book?

This cancer article shows that many people each year die from cancer and a lot of people have to struggle with the loss of their loved ones. Some cases are more difficult because it can affect their children with going through something that tough at a young age and cause future problems.

The relationship between bullying & suicide

Media reports often link bullying with suicide. However, most youth who are bullied do not have thoughts of suicide or engage in suicidal behaviors.

Although kids who are bullied are at risk of suicide, bullying alone is not the cause. Many issues contribute to suicide risk, including depression, problems at home, and trauma history. Additionally, specific groups have an increased risk of suicide, including American Indian and Alaskan Native, Asian American, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth. This risk can be increased further when these kids are not supported by parents, peers, and schools. Bullying can make an unsupportive situation worse.

Andrea Kranker Suicide

Andrea Kranker committed suicide from bullying at school & had home problems with the death of her sister, dying in a car wreck. This relates to the book I choice "Reasons to be Happy" because Hannah has had problems because of bullying & the death of her mother, which makes her think she has to go bulimic to maintain her weight because thats the only thing she feels like she can control in her life.
