Rio de Janeiro - City of Dreams
Made by Lelde Kalnina
Rio de Janeiro has been one of the Brazil's most popular and frequent tourist destinations for decades. It is second largest city in Brazil and it is located on Brazil's Atlantic coast near the Tropic of Capricorn.
The city was founded by Portuguese in 16th century. Rio de Janeiro has long been regarded as the Carnival capital of the world - from 1723. This carnival is one of the most stunning events in the whole world, when almost three hundred million Brazilians around the country celebrate in a parade of sound, colour and taste. This amazing event is taking place when summer in Rio is at its peak - in February which is the hottest month in the Southern Hemisphere.
With its white sandy beaches, high mountains and charming harbour Rio de Janeiro is known as the "cidade maravilhosa" - wonderful city. It is blessed with one of the most beautiful natural settings for metropolis in the world. Stunning buildings dot the city - from old world buildings like the Theatro Municipal and São Bento church to the hyper modern Museum de Arte Contempranea de Niteroi, Maracana Stadium etc.
The city is broken down into four districts. Centro including Lapa and Santa Teresa is city’s financial and business centre. There also can see many historic buildings from its early days such as National Library, Metropolitant Cathedral and Pedro Ernesto Palace. West zone is the best place where people can relax, calm down and enjoy one of the most famous beaches in Brazil – Ipanema and Copacabana. North zone are ideal for those who are interested in wildlife, science and biology – there tourists can visit Quinta da Boa Vista Park with the city’s Zoo, the National Observatory, Botanical garden and more. South zone contains many major tourist sites such as the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and Sugar loaf.
Place I would like to visit in Rio de Janeiro is peak of Corcovado mountains. There people can see a statue of Jesus Christ. It is not only well - known symbol of the Rio, it is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. But it is not only statue which fascinates tourists, view from the peak looks surreal because of the city's landscape which is full with magic. There definitely is peaceful atmosphere and at night tourists can enjoy the city lights from the top of the mountain - it looks absolutely spectacular.
In short, there are so many things to see in Rio de Janeiro. In this city everyone can find what they are looking for. It is perfect place for those who love gorgeous views, dancing and enjoy hot weather. I hope that someday I will be able to go there and see everything by myself!
