New France (1608)
My Dearest Sister Marilyn,
It is I, is your brother Victor. I do not know when you will be receiving this postcard but it is the year 1908 and I have made it to New France. As you know I do not have a lot of money and currently can not afford to buy land or a house, fret not though they have a payment plan here where I work on the land and after a while it will become mine. They call me an indentured servant. They do not have this kind of work where you are back in England, but I assure you it is for good reason. The climate in Canada is unbearable and I have to work all year round, right now it is autumn and we are harvesting crops and tilling the soil. The masters (people I work for) are very harsh with their commands and punishments. They do not understand that we must work 12 to 14 hour days in the sun and we get tired. I currently have to share a small cabin with fourteen other men but they are nice people and they share my pain. Also, they have these people called natives here. They are wild and barbaric, they do not follow orders or listen to the Europeans. In fact, I have noticed that there is little to no interactions with them at all; I think it is out of fear. I once saw a native kill a man for falling on his sacred land. I am frightened of them and do not even look their way. We have kept our same Catholic religion and we have one village priest that holds ceremonies every Sunday. There are French and Englishmen here and it seems like we only interact to fight over territory and goods. In the future, I want to own my own property but I do not know how long it will take, I want to make a family here and get a real job working as a fisherman, and i wish to see you again before I pass. I am not coming back to England for I am Canadien now but perhaps you can come to New France and by that time I hope to own this land and you can stay on it with your family and we can build a new life here just like when we were younger. It will be beautiful here when everything is done and I truly hope you will come to see it. Please write me back as soon as possible i would love to hear from you.
Love Always Your Big Brother Victor
