my pregnancy journey
random thoughts from a first time mom
busy baby filled weekend!!!
we had our childbirth and breastfeeding class at our hospital today. i didn't know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised at how informative and helpful it was. we met 2 wonderful nurses, alicia and heather, who have many of the same views and ideals as us and i really hope we will have one of the two for our birth. i loved that they encourage skin-to-skin immediately after birth and baby led breastfeeding. they have everything needed for the baby in your room and you stay in the same (huge!) room for labor, delivery, and postpartum. they never take the baby away unless you request it. i was incredibly impressed with the entire hospital and their procedures. the only disadvantage of this hospital is that there's no nicu. so i can't deliver there if i go into labor before 36 weeks. let's just pray baby lev doesn't make his appearance early and we'll be good to go!
meeting with our doula
i LOVE our doula! i'm so happy we made the decision to have one. for those that don't know, my goal is a non-medicated, low-intervention birth. after lots of reading and research, i found that a natural birth is the best chance for someone who has had breast reduction surgery to be successful at breastfeeding. that and the thought of not feeling part of my body and not being able to move in addition with a higher chance for a c-section scares me much more than pain. she's currently in midwifery school and is a certified lactation consultant with lots of experience with women who have breastfed after a reduction. she'll be helping me prepare prenatally, through the delivery, and postpartum with breastfeeding. my plan is to labor at home as long as possible. our doula will come to our house when i go into labor, check my progress, and advise us when we should head to the hospital. it's also a nice feeling to know that we have someone that can be here in case aaron, his parents, or my mom aren't here when I go into labor. we're thrilled to have her as part of this amazing experience!
we had our maternity photos with Brittney Violet Photography this weekend! Brittney will be doing our birth and newborn photos as well. she made the shoot super easy and i love that she will be capturing one of the most important events in our lives! thanks Brittney!! can't wait to see the pics!!!!
