What are the three types of rocks?
Sedimentary rocks are rocks formed by the deposition at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water. example= breccia
Igneous= igneous rocks derived form the latin word meaning fire is one of the three main rock types. Igneous rocks are formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. example= obsidian
Metamorphic= Is a rock that was once form of rock but has changed to another due to the fact that it was influenced by heat, pressure, or some other agent without passing through the liquid phase. example= slate
What is stratification?
refers to the way sediment layers are stacked over each other, and can occur on the scale of hundreds of meters, and down to submillimeter scale. It is a fundamental feature of sedimentary rocks. layers were deposited by storms or floods.
How can you tell if a rock is old?
The bottom layer of the rock forms first which means its the oldest. each layer above that is younger and top is youngest of all.The mollusk Inoceramus labiatus is a kind of sea animal that went extinct 65 million years ago and appered 144 million years ago. so if you find a rock cointaining this mollusk must be beetween 144 and 65 million years old. Nerinea trinodosa is a kind of sea animal that lived between 206 million and 144 million years ago. Tropites subbullatus is a kind of sea animal that lived between 248 million and 206 million years ago. these can tell you about how old these rocks are.
What caused huge blocks of horizontal sedimentary layers to be tipped or older rock layers to be on top of younger rock layers?
Through the tectonic processes involved in plate movement; folding and faulting. compression causes thrusting of older rocks over younger rocks. further compression causes the rocks to fold into anticline.
what ways that living organisms have shaped landforms?
A coral reef is one example of how living organisms have shaped landforms. Coral reefs are wave resistent limestone produced by living organism.
