1984 Reading Log: Part 4
Response: In Book Two, Winston and Julia form a relationship. Such a relationship is considered unacceptable by the government, and the two meet with each other in secrecy, despite the risks. This dangerous relationship symbolizes defiance in the face of an oppressive regime. A claim by Julia that she has had similar relations with dozens of members of the Inner Party reveals even more of this defiance exercised by individuals. All of these apparent relationships have occurred directly under the rule of Big Brother, which implies that not everyone supposedly loyal to INGSOC follows all of the government's rules.
