Canadian Shield

The Canadian Shield is the largest region in Canada about 8,000,000 square kilometers. When many people move to a new country or region, they look at the different types of tourist attractions. This region provides a variety of fun activities including many winter activities and family or group activities. The southern part of this region gets a lot of rain and snow. Therefore, the winters are very cold and the summers are warm and long. Since Ontario and Quebec are in this shield, they get a lot of snow. Some of the winter activities include skiing, snowboarding, skating, snowshoeing, and hockey. The average temperature in the winter is -18 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius in the summer. By looking at these statistics, the temperature varies throughout the year giving us very cold and warm weather. The Canadian Shield consists of igneous and metamorphic rocks. It has a lot of igneous rock because of its volcanic history. Igneous rock is formed when magma cools down. This region has many types of landscapes which is good for touring purposes. The western part of the Canadian Shield has plains, and pingos. Plains are areas of land with a few trees. The eastern part is a lot more ancient than the west so it includes lakes, eskers, drumlins, and more. The vegetation in this region is a little different from other regions in Canada. There are mostly trees, which include birch, aspen, tamarack, black and white spruce, hemlock, pine and balsam trees. These trees are very beautiful during the fall as the leaves change colour. The wildlife here is also very beautiful and entertaining to watch. Some animals in this region are moose, black bears, grizzly bears, wolves, foxes, beavers, different types of rodents, wood buffalo, woodland caribou, weasels and hares. There are also a lot of different birds including the great horned owl, bald eagle and boreal owl.

The Orange shaded part is the Canadian Shield. It includes The Northwest Territories, part of manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

Recreational Opportunities

The Canadian Shield has a lot of recreational and business opportunities. The logging industry is successful using river transport to ship logs. For example, raw materials, minerals, forestry and other products are transported Hudson’s Bay during the summer months. Skiing, boating, snowmobiling and fishing are also a part of recreational opportunities. These opportunities are suitable for the Canadian shield in many ways. Firstly, this region has a lot of important materials such as gold, silver, copper, nickel and zinc. These good have to be shipped to other places which creates many jobs for people. Also, The Canadian Shield gets a lot of snow and low temperatures during the winter which influences the different winter activities.

Climate Change

Climate change will impact the tourist attractions in The Canadian Shield. As the temperature gradually rises it will impact most of the activities held in this region. Warmer weather will change the amount of rain, snow, ice which will affect the winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding, skating, snowshoeing, and hockey. As we get less snow, it would dramatically influence the reputation of this region. The Canadian Shield is known for its cold snowy winters and the fun sports played in them.

Natural Disasters

Natural disasters are not very common in The Canadian Shield but they can be very dangerous and scary. Severe disasters include thunderstorms, hail, blizzards, high winds and heavy rain. Many of these storms are influenced because of the amount of rain and snow this regions concedes.
