Galapagos Islands

Thesis Statement: The Galapagos Islands are fascinating place because they are home to some unique  animal species.  


1.) The Galapagos marine iguana is the only iguana to swim in the ocean.  It eats algae from the sea floor and uses the rocks to sun bath so that it can survive swimming in the frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean.  The Galapagos land iguana is a different color and generally eats cactus.  The land iguana is found on 6 of the islands where as the marine iguana is found on every island.

2.) Galapagos penguins are the only penguins found on the equator.  They are the smallest of all South American penguins and can survive because of the cold Pacific waters. There are only 1000 pair of Galapagos penguins and they can be found on the islands of Isabella and Fernandina.

3.) The Galapagos Islands were home to the last giant Pinta Tortoise, Lonesome George.  Lonesome George was about 100 years old when he passed away June 12th, 2012.  He was considered the rarest animal in the world as he was the last member of his species.
