**Addition Facts and Strategies**

**Count on** when adding 0, 1, 2, or 3

**Doubles** when adding the same number twice.

**Doubles plus one or minus one:** double the smaller number and add one (ex. 4 + 5 really equals 4 + 4 + 1) or double the larger number and minus one (ex. 4 + 5 really equals 5 + 5 - 1).

**Almost Partners Strategy:** find the number in between and double it (ex. for 6 + 4, the number in the middle is 5, if you double 5 you get 10!)

**Adding Nine:** When adding 9's, change the 9 to a 10 and then reduce the other number by one (ex. 9 + 3 is the same as 10 + 2). This strategy really helps the student to also understand place value.

**Make a Ten:** Start with the higher number and take some from the smaller number to make a 10. Add the remaining numbers to the 10. (ex. In 4+7, start with 7 and add 3 from the 4 to make 10. Then take the remaining 1 and add it to the 10 to equal 11.)
