Chapter 5 and 6

The steak in the dining hall for Holden was very acrid in taste was not appealing to him. After the steak he went back to his room and had to listen to a story from Ackley that was so silly it was indelible for him to forget. There was also a callous feeling about when Allie died of leukemia. Holden then was very indulgent about Stadlater and his date with Jane. Stadlater was then in compulsion about the idea that he punched and hurt Holden.

Chapters 1 & 2

Quote Chapter 1&2 Holden

"I flunked you in history because you knew absolutely nothing."(Salinger 10)

Chapter 3&4

"I put on this hat that I’d bought in New York that morning. It was this red hunting hat, with one of those very, very long peaks. I saw it in the window of this sports store when we got out of the subway, just after I noticed I'd lost all the goddam foils. It only cost me a buck. The way I wore it, I swung the old peak way around to the back—very corny, I'll admit, but I liked it that way. I looked good in it that way." (Salinger 21)

He wants to feel independent and like he can do things on his own, he wants to be his own independent person. By buying the hat it makes him stick out and he says it looks good on him, making him feel confident.
