POEMS BY WHITMAN

AMERICA

Centre of equal daughters, equal sons,

All, all alike endear’d, grown, ungrown, young or old,

Strong, ample, fair, enduring, capable, rich,

Perennial with the Earth, with Freedom, Law and Love,

A grand, sane, towering, seated Mother,

Chair’d in the adamant of Time.

"ARE YOU THE NEW PERSON DRAWN TOWARD ME?"

Are you the new person drawn toward me?

To begin with, take warning, I am surely far different from what you suppose;Do you suppose you will find in me your ideal?

Do you think it so easy to have me become your lover?

Do you think the friendship of me would be unalloy’d satisfaction?

Do you think I am trusty and faithful?

Do you see no further than this façade, this smooth and tolerant manner of me?

Do you suppose yourself advancing on real ground toward a real heroic man?

Have you no thought, O dreamer, that it may be all maya, illusion?

Why I like these poems:

I like these two poems by Whitman. I decided to post them on this Tackk because they both show how creative Whitman was, while still being able to keep it simple. The first poem resembles the way I feel about my country. I like the second poem because it should be the first things to think about when seeking a friend in a new person.

SCANSION: RHYTHM & METER

For AMERICA:IAMBIC

For ARE YOU THE NEW PERSON DRAWN TOWARD ME: TROCHAIC

THEME

AMERICA Theme: A country of liberty -- The poem earns this theme because it explains the freedom of this country and how it is a great mother towards the American people.

ARE YOU THE NEW PERSON DRAWN TOWARD ME Theme: Trusting strangers -- The poem earns this theme because throughout the poem questions are asked of the trust the reader has in a new friend.

Connection to theme's

I've connected the theme of ARE YOU THE NEW PERSON DRAWN TO ME to the poem MINISTER"S BLACK VEIL (theme: we are all sinners in God's eyes). The themes can connect to one another in a way that we are all human and make mistakes that allow us to not be trusted by man nor God.

Romanticism characteristics

In the poem America many characteristics of Romanticism are shown. Nationalism and the emotions of freedom are the main display in the poem. A sense of honor for America is given in the story just as the characteristics of Romanticism are.
