Our 2007 Trip to Lesotho

Volume 2

In 2007, my wife and I spent 2 months on a "service holiday" in The Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho in Southern Africa.  Below are several posts and pics from that trip describing our work and experiences, made possible by generous donations from our friends and family.

Your Guide To Game and Wildlife in Lesotho:
Unlike it's neighbour South Africa, Lesotho is not known for its local fauna.  In fact, there are few wild species remaining beyond birds and lizards.  Most animals found are domesticated - sheep, cows, pigs and chickens.  But that does not mean we've been sheltered from the wilds during our short time here.

About 10 days ago we were joined in our rondavel by Sasquatch.  We named our new roommate thus because of the all the noise he made as he freely stomped around our home, knocking over all in his path.  This usually happened between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM, in total darkness.  This was terrifying for a few nights, where we slept very little.  For the next week, we used every means at our disposal to eradicate our new friend.  We bought 2 kinds of rat poison and liberally scattered the stuff around the place.  Unfortunately, these poisons typically take up to 2 weeks to be effective.  I imagined Sasquatch to be the size of a small dog, whose nervous system had evolved to a point of immunity against such chemicals.

The night before last, Sasquatch finally made himself visible, with his dying breaths.  As you would expect, he was not nearly as massive as we had expected.  But my little man punched above his weight, taking us all 12 rounds with him.  I salute the little trooper.  But, in the end, he had to go.

In other news, we propose our big project to the Malealea Development Trust tomorrow.  Assuming they support the proposal, we'll provide a complete update on what we're going to do.  We're both very excited and feel that it will have a strong and lasting impact on the local economy.
