The Mariana Trench

Features and Exploration

By Austin Zou

The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the world. It lies a the boundary of the Pacific tectonic plate and the Philippine plate. The trench is caused by subduction, but there is no earthquake because there is mud that easily slides rather than hard rocks. Also, it has the the highest depth because the crust at the bottom is very old.

Trieste is the only craft to ever go down into the deepest part of the the ocean: The Challenger Deep.  Trieste was a bathyscaphe designed by Auguste Piccard. The crew were these people: Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh. They came safely back and made a world record for the farthest dive down.
