Brain Cancer

A cancerous or noncancerous mass or growth of abnormal cells in the brain

What is having brain cancer really like?

No one expects to get such a disease, when they live such a normal life.

Brain cancer is when abnormal cells form in tissue, creating a brain tumor. Quite frankly, this can start with or without cancer cells. This can happen, starting at the brain, or somewhere else in the body and move into the brain.(Institute, National Cancer)

Scary, right?!

120 types of tumors have been discovered.

The top three most common brain tumors are:

  • Astrocytomas: forms from star shaped cells that can grow anywhere in the brain or spine.
  • Oligodenrogliomas: produces mylin, which is a fatty covering that protects the nerves. These type of tumor usually are found in the cerebrum and grow slowly and rarely spread into surrounding brain tissue.
  • Ependymomas: form in the lining of the ventricles and sometimes in the spinal chord. This type of tumor can develop at any age; they are most common in children.

diagnosing & Treatment

Brain cancer is diagnosed through different tests, as a MRI, (magnetic resonance, imaging scan) or a CT or CAT scan, a computed homograph (Brain Tumor - Diagnosis). Treatments variey with different people, based on age and general health. Treatment options are surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, are main types (Brain Cancer Causes,).

For 2015, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, predicts that 22,850 adults (12,900 men & 9,950 women) in the United States will have some sort of brain and spinal cord tumor. 4,300 children and teens, under the age of 15, will be diagnosed with this cancer as well (Brain Tumor - Statistics).

Preventing cancer and staying healthy, is easier than trying to beat the cancer its self!

The American Cancer Society, recommends:

to quit smoking

stay at a healthy weight

eat right

stay active,

protect yourself from the sun,

and have recommend screeing tests!

What I learned

I learned that:

Power lines and hair dye are possible causes of cancer

There are over 100 types of brain cancer

How the brain tumor is formed. (By abnormal cells in tissue)

Brain cancer doesn't always have to start in the brain
